At seven weeks pregnant, your baby is about the size of a blueberry! Since most women don’t know the exact date of conception, the standard method for charting a pregnancy is by counting forward from the first day of your last menstrual period LMP. This method assumes that you ovulate 14 days after your period begins and that you’ll remember the day your period started! These results give health care providers—and you—a ballpark estimate for your baby’s due date.

For more accurate pregnancy dating, health care providers can request an ultrasound. Careful measurements taken in the first trimester are even more accurate at predicting an embryo’s age than ultrasounds performed later in pregnancy.

The viability of the pregnancy, number of fetuses, and the expected delivery date can be checked by doing an early pregnancy scan. The best possible information and resolution is obtained if the test is done transvaginally. Clearer images are obtained if we are able to use a much higher resolution transducer by getting close to the fetus.

To obtain the best possible images of the fetus, the doctor or sonographer will introduce and position the transducer in the best possible manner. These are universal standard practices and will not harm you or the baby. No bladder filling or other preparations are required for the purpose. You will be informed and assured by the staff about what is being seen. If the test goes well, you will be given some images to take home. If you are late on your period, an early pregnancy test will be performed to question the date of the menstrual cycle.

Fetuses are of the same size at this time of gestation so the expected date of delivery can be identified. The viability of the pregnancy can be confirmed as the heart of the fetus can be seen in six to seven weeks from this date.

At 5 weeks into pregnancy things are so small there is very little to see on ultrasound. Even at 6 weeks it can be difficult to see an embryo with some people. We say 5 weeks plus because without being able to measure the embryo, we can only measure the mean sac diameter which is a combination of 3 measurements of the sac to gather an approximate date, but it isn’t as accurate and measuring the embryo.

At this point we can see the dark area with a small circle inside. The dark area is the gestation sac and the small white circle is called a yolk sac. The job of the yolk sac is to provide the growing embryo with nutrients until the placenta takes over later on into pregnancy. With only a yolk sac to see, we can confirm that the pregnancy is in the right place or not ectopic.

The image above is now showing a 6 week pregnancy at this point is is possible to see the embryo and measure the gestational age quite well, but it is not always possible to see a heartbeat at this time. If the heartbeat is not visible it can cause a lot of worry waiting to scanned again in a week or so time so it’s always best to avoid this situation from occurring.

This is why, at Early Life Ultrasound centre we offer early pregnancy scans from 7 weeks. In this image the embryo is now 7 weeks measures approximately 10mm from head to bottom or crown to rump. There is a yolk sac but it can’t be seen in this particular image. It is normally possible to trace a heartbeat at this stage, which is why we tend to offer early pregnancy scans at this time.

Ultrasound Scan at 5 Weeks of Pregnancy

An early pregnancy scan, offered between weeks 5 and 11 of pregnancy, is also known as a first trimester viability scan, or a dating scan. You can come to us for an early pregnancy scan from week 5 of pregnancy, which is 1 day after the first day of your missed period. We are happy to see you with or without a doctor’s referral.

In the early weeks how much we can see through a pregnancy ultrasound scan in have just missed your period we cannot detect the pregnancy on scan, all we can Somewhere between 4 and 5 weeks, we can sometimes see a small black Wait one week more for your dating scan and see how much baby changes.

The pregnancy is calculated based on the average menstrual cycle which is 28 days. The first day of menstrual bleeding marks the first day of the menstrual cycle. Right in the middle of this picture perfect 28 day cycle is when ovulation occurs day 14 of the cycle and roughly 2 days before and after is when you are most fertile. This is why many fertility doctors recommend to have intercourse every 3 days if you really are trying to have a baby because the ovulation may occur a little earlier or later than you may think.

When calculating the weeks of pregnancy we include those two weeks from the first day of the LMP as this is the easiest part of the cycle to notice and to record. We also will enquire about the length of your cycle and whether it is regular or irregular. All of this is helpful in trying to establish the gestation. For example, if your cycle is regular and 33 days long we would expect your ovulation to have occurred later 5 days and an early pregnancy scan will most likely show a baby that measures 5 days less than you were expecting.
